A 4 person household on 15 grain water removes about 4,800 grains of hardness a day. That single figure drives the softener size, the regeneration interval and the annual salt cost, so getting it right is worth more than any other number in softener shopping.

This is the number everything else about a softener falls out of. Size, regeneration interval, salt consumption and running cost are all arithmetic on the daily hardness load, and it is two multiplications.

The part people miss is compensation. A softener exchanges dissolved iron and manganese as well as calcium and magnesium, so water carrying either has a higher effective load than its hardness figure alone suggests.

The trade figure is higher on purpose. A softener that runs out of capacity mid cycle delivers hard water without telling anybody, which is a worse failure than regenerating slightly early. Outdoor irrigation is normally plumbed around the softener and should not be counted.

Why iron changes the figure

Ion exchange resin does not only pick up calcium and magnesium. It exchanges dissolved iron and manganese too, so those consume capacity that the hardness number alone does not account for.

The trade adds roughly 3 to 5 grains per gallon for every part per million of dissolved iron, and 4 to 6 for manganese. Those are conventions rather than standards and sources disagree within the ranges.

Critically, compensation applies only to dissolved clear water iron. Already oxidized iron plugs the resin rather than being exchanged by it, and iron bacteria is a living colony no softener addresses at all.

What is daily hardness load?

The total grains of hardness your household removes from the water in a day: people multiplied by gallons per person per day multiplied by hardness in grains per gallon. For 4 people on 15 grain water that is 4,800 grains. Softener size, regeneration interval and annual salt use all derive from it.

Why use 80 gallons per person per day?

Because that is the conservative figure the water treatment trade sizes on. Published end use studies measure indoor use closer to 59 gallons per person. The higher figure exists because a softener running out of capacity mid cycle silently delivers hard water, which is a worse failure than regenerating a little early.

Should I include outdoor water use?

Normally no. Outdoor irrigation is usually plumbed around the softener, because there is no benefit to softening water for a lawn and doing so wastes both capacity and salt. If your irrigation genuinely runs through the softener, count it, and consider re-plumbing it around instead.

How much does iron add?

Roughly 3 to 5 grains per gallon for each part per million of dissolved iron, which is a trade convention rather than a published standard. Only dissolved clear water iron counts: oxidized iron plugs resin rather than being exchanged, and iron bacteria fouls it. Confirm which form you have before compensating.

Does the load change through the year?

Household use does, and a metered softener handles that automatically by regenerating on water actually used rather than on a timer. What does not change is your hardness, unless your utility changes source. On a private well, hardness can shift after drought or heavy rain, which is a reason to retest occasionally.
