Temperature matters more than people expect

The drain water is concentrate rather than waste in the usual sense: it carries away what the membrane rejected. A membrane run at too high a recovery scales and fails early, so the ratio is a design choice rather than pure inefficiency.
Why low feed pressure is the real limit
A conventional system stops producing when the storage tank reaches roughly two thirds of feed pressure, because that is where the automatic shut off valve trips. So feed pressure sets both the production rate and the point at which the system gives up.
Below about 40 pounds per square inch this becomes the binding constraint, and the symptom is a faucet that gives a cupful and then trickles. Fitting a larger membrane does not help, because membrane area was never the limit. A booster pump, or a tankless system that pumps rather than relying on line pressure, is the fix.
