What size water softener do you actually need?

Softener sizing has two inputs, and skipping either one produces a wrong answer. The first is household size, converted into a daily water use figure. The second is measured hardness, which multiplies that water use into a daily grain load, the actual number a softener has to clear between regenerations. Neither figure substitutes for the other, and neither can be guessed: hardness has to come from a real test, whether a Consumer Confidence Report or a strip.

How much water does a household actually use per day?
Two different figures answer this question, and conflating them is why softener sizing advice varies so widely across the internet.
The American Water Works Association's Residential End Uses of Water study measured roughly 59 gallons per person per day of indoor use, a genuinely measured figure rather than a planning assumption.

Why does the sizing convention use 80 gallons instead of 59?
The water treatment trade deliberately sizes above the measured figure, and the table below is what nearly every softener sizing calculator, including the one on this site, actually uses.
At the trade's 80 gallon per person per day sizing convention, a family of four is planned for 320 gallons daily, well above the 236 gallons the AWWA study actually measured.

The extra margin covers a softener that regenerates too infrequently rather than too often, since running out of capacity mid cycle delivers hard water without any warning at all.

"Twin tank" marks a daily load that runs past the largest single stock nameplate (96,000 grains) inside a seven day target, meaning a single tank residential softener would regenerate too often to be practical. That combination genuinely needs a twin tank or commercial sized system rather than a bigger single tank.
Why the nameplate on the box is not the working number
Every nameplate above assumes an efficient 8 pound per cubic foot salt dose. The nameplate rating itself, printed on the box, is a different and higher number, because it is measured at the maximum salt dose the resin can be pushed to.
A 48,000 grain nameplate holds 1.5 cubic feet of resin and delivers only 33,600 grains at an efficient 8 pound dose, well under the number printed on the tank.

What about iron or manganese in the water?
Dissolved iron and manganese both add to the daily grain load a softener has to clear, using a widely taught compensation figure of roughly 3 to 5 grains per gallon for every part per million of dissolved iron, and roughly 4 to 6 for manganese. Add that compensated figure to your tested hardness before using the grid above, since sizing on hardness alone undersizes a softener on water carrying either mineral. Does outdoor water use count toward softener sizing?
No. Softened water only covers water that actually passes through the softener, and outdoor irrigation lines are normally plumbed around it entirely, both to save salt and because plants generally do not benefit from softened water. Can I just buy the biggest softener available to be safe?
Oversizing has a real cost: a softener with far more resin than the household load requires regenerates on its forced outer schedule rather than genuinely on demand, and it costs more upfront for capacity that sits unused.
