What to skip
Skip the softener until the test says otherwise. At or below about 7 grains per gallon most households never notice hardness, and a softener adds salt, a drain line and an annual cost to solve a problem they do not have.
Skip the shower filter if you already have whole house carbon, because it is doing the same job twice. And skip anything marketed on hardness in a shower head: no shower filter softens water, there is no room for an ion exchange bed in one and no way to regenerate it.
What to upgrade first
The first upgrade is a bigger housing, not a finer cartridge. If pressure is the complaint, moving from a standard 2.5 inch housing to a 4.5 inch big blue does far more than changing micron rating, and it extends cartridge life at the same time.
The second is reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap, but only if a laboratory result gives you a reason. It is the technology for dissolved contaminants, and buying it without a result to match to a certified NSF/ANSI 58 claim is buying it on faith.

2. Sediment and taste

3. Know when to change it
