Hardness and pH matter because they decide whether a softener, a neutralizer or nothing at all is the right next purchase.

When to test beyond the baseline

A wider panel earns its price when a specific reason exists to look for something the baseline does not cover. Arsenic and uranium are regionally concentrated, so a well in an area with known geology deserves a specific test for both rather than assuming the baseline covers them. Lead is worth adding on any home with plumbing installed before lead free requirements took effect, since it comes from fittings and solder rather than from the aquifer itself. PFAS is worth adding for a well anywhere near a known or suspected contamination source, such as a former industrial site, an airport, or a facility that historically used firefighting foam.

Collecting a sample that a laboratory can actually use

  1. Read the kit instructions before touching a tap. Different parameters need different collection methods. A bacteria sample generally needs an interior tap with the aerator removed and a brief sterilization step, while other parameters may specify running the water for a set time first. Following the wrong method for the wrong test invalidates the sample.
  2. Choose the tap deliberately. An outdoor spigot or a tap with a water softener or filter already installed ahead of it gives a different answer than the raw well supply. If the goal is characterizing the well itself, sample as close to the source as the kit instructions allow.
  3. Use only what the laboratory shipped. Sterile bottles, preservative vials and any provided gloves exist for a reason specific to that test. Substituting a container from home can contaminate the sample or void the result.
  4. Label everything immediately. Date, time and any notes about recent well activity, such as a repair or unusually heavy rain, help a laboratory interpret an unusual result correctly.
